תקציר

Discusses the views of Hashomer Hatzair leader Meir Ya'ari (1897-1947), which reflect the views of the movement as well. Notes that he was initially in favor of having Israeli emissaries in Europe return after the outbreak of the war, but then expressed regret over the matter, and that he was critical of decisions made by movement leaders in Vilna in the early years of the war. Although he initially opposed a mass immigration of European Jews to Eretz Israel, after the horrors of the Holocaust became common knowledge in late 1942, Ya'ari was strongly in favor of rescue, but had no specific suggestions. He opposed the idea of Yishuv Jews joining the British army to fight in Europe, and was ambivalent about resistance in the ghettos.
