Abstract

The paper addresses the question, under what conditions purely relational anti-system parties which are not anti-democratic, are nevertheless labelled as a subversive opposition to the regime. The hypothesis suggested is that three variables are related to such a phenomenon in a democracy: a deep national cleavage and a security overriding tension between a national majority and minority; a closed structure of competition and the emergence of right-wing parties supremacy. The case study of parties representing the Arab-Palestinian minority in Israel is used to illustrate this dynamic between 2000-2009.
