Abstract
This paper proposes a framework for understanding the training of amateur actors in Israeli community-based theatre, with potential applicability to similar theatres globally. I argue that the training of amateur actors is structured along an axis between adaptation and design, moving from the familiar to the new. The director adapts to the abilities and limitations of the amateur actors, redesigns or reframes materials during workshop activities, casting, and character development, thereby effectively training the amateur actors.
