Abstract

This article deals with the consulting session in its' physical and symbolic context assuming that the aesthetic space carries tremendous significance - whether conscious or not – for both people in this relationship. By reviewing four design elements (style, color, lighting and accessories) this article examines the importance of the consulting space as a diagnostic tool as well as a consulting instrument while focusing on the construction of power relations and the opportunity for empathetic relations in personal counseling. We suggest that when counseling is enacted in the consultee's space, the organizational entity is constantly present which makes it more difficult to detach emotionally and conceptually. The presence of the organization comes to mind not only on the concrete level (and due to surrounding disturbances), but also on the conceptual level due to the unconscious power of organizational aesthetics. The outcome is an 'aesthetic regime' of which both sides are prisoners. In a private setting, greater discursive variations are possible since the interaction is anchored in a therapeutic as well as an organizational context. Most spaces are an eclectic combination of both and do not properly symbolize the evasiveness of this interaction which is meant to enable an alternative discourse. We propose that the consulting space should generate an intense experience so that it does not match any familiar social order which would propose following a certain set of codes and behaviors. A non-banal design signals detachment from the system and facilitates an alternative to the accepted counseling discourse
