Abstract
Discusses Ne'eman's documentary film, the main message of which is reconciliation with the past. Ne'eman filmed a play by Eliana Schechter, which was based on the experiences of Manka Alter, a survivor of Theresienstadt, and was first performed at a high school for the arts in Tel-Aviv in 2005. The play filmed by Ne'eman was a later dual-language performance in Schwerin, Germany, with a cast of both Israeli and German youth. The film includes interviews with people involved in the production. Searching for a common denominator among the Israeli and German participants, Ne'eman found it in music, which also helped many internees in Theresienstadt. The play is about a Jewish girl who was sent to the ghetto, but continued to dream about being a singer. It stresses the importance there of music, which was something the Nazis could not take away. The film ends with Alter's rendition of the song "Zitra", written by her teacher, Karl Svenk, who was also interned in Theresienstadt.
