Describes the effect of the Nazi occupation on Tunisia. Surveys memoirs of Jews regarding the occupation which were published before Memmi's autobiographical novel "La statue de sel" (1953). Analyzes Memmi's presentation of his experiences and those of his community during the occupation. States that the experiences of the Tunisian community were different from those of the Jews in Europe, and that the Jews of Tunisia did not regard their war experiences as related to the Holocaust in Europe - neither during the war nor in retrospect.
