This study examines the meaning of ICT contribution to pedagogy as
provided by ICT leaders in schools, interpreted through three metaphors of
learning (Paavola, Lipponen & Hakkarainen, 2004): knowledge acquisition,
participation and knowledge creation, as well as five metaphors for digital
learning (Shamir-Inbal & Blau, 2016): toolbox, active player, creative mind,
shared desktop and connected world. We use these metaphors to analyze the
perspectives and practices of school ICT leaders in pedagogical integration of
ICT in their schools. The study is based on interviews with 13 ICT leaders,
including 8 school ICT coordinators and 5 regional ICT coordinators (who
provide technological-pedagogical guidance to approximately five school
ICT coordinators), in one of the districts of the Ministry of Education. We
found that among the general metaphors of learning, the most presented
metaphor in the participant's words is the knowledge creation metaphor,
followed by the metaphor of acquisition. However participation metaphor
was mentioned half as much as the two other metaphors. All five metaphors
of digital learning were prevalent in the practices described by the ICT
leaders, indicating that they recognize the varied contribution of ICT tools for
pedagogy in the digital age.
