The introduction by Guy Miron discusses the life and work of Eötvös (1813-1871), who became the Hungarian Minister of Education and Religion in 1867. "The Emancipation of the Jews" was written by Eötvös in 1840, when he was a member of the Diet, to advocate the granting of Hungarian citizenship to the Jews. In his work he condemned oppression of the Jews and blood libels against them, and expressed sympathy with Jewish suffering. He insisted that, once granted citizenship, the Jews would become loyal Hungarians. However, he was not ready to simply accept the Jews as "others"; he felt that giving them equal rights would bring more of them to convert to Christianity. Partial emancipation was granted in 1840, with full emancipation following only in 1867, when Eötvös served as a government minister.
